7 Mistakes We All Have Made In Life

“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.”

The wise words of Johnny Cash ought to ring in our ears repeatedly. Every time we make a mistake, we harshly berate ourselves, believing ourselves to be utter failures unable to accomplish anything in life. The fact of the matter is, we should view mistakes as a method of learning, of growing into a person who understands right from wrong with the wisdom of experience. Mistakes inadvertently make us who we are and more importantly, help us realize who we can hope to be if we choose to better ourselves and learn from our mistakes. Here are the top 7 errors we typically make from which we should be learning!

1. Failing an exam.

Let’s admit it, we’ve all been there holding that paper covered in angry red ink and a big fat ‘F’! However instead of letting this incident get the best of us and make us feel like useless failures we should learn a valuable lesson in managing time effectively and not procrastinating!

2. Arguing with your parents.

We always feel guilty about fighting with our parents as presumably they do want what’s best for us, so why question them? However through the process of arguing you actually manage to understand why exactly they are acting as they are and in other cases instead of just silently accepting everything without understanding it, they will take notice and listen to you. Either way, it is something that should be learned from.

3. Going on binge days.

Yes all of us go on diets and all of us experience glorious, gluttonous binge days as well! However after binging moments, we ought to learn how to practice moderation and self control rather than descending into a pit of guilt and horror. Of course on occasion, why deny the joy of those creamy donuts!

4. Getting lost on a road trip.

Getting lost in a cramped car, drowning in empty McDonalds wrappers, cranky travel companions and of course the lack of loo! It is always upsetting to lose your way and miss your destination but life is truly a journey, not a destination according to the poetic words of Aerosmith. What seemed inconvenient and irritating then will inevitably turn into a humorous, nostalgic memory later on.

5. Taking a gap year.

You’re in your last year of high school and it seems as if everyone’s completely ready for the next step and all your friends know exactly what degrees to pursue except for you. Many people who take gap years before applying to university question themselves endlessly and put themselves down, however time off allows you to truly understand what you want to do and who you want to be.

6. Throwing a crazy party when your parents go on a trip.

Yes regret and panic will set in the next morning as we survey empty cups, broken glass and passed out party animals snoozing in the kitchen and yes, we will be grounded for the next 5 years. But it was a wickedly glorious night and we’ll remember it forever! Memories!

7. Missing the plane/bus/train.

Okay this really is a bummer. The places to go and people to see in our daily schedules will get delayed and everyone will blame you even if the dog ate your ticket! However sometimes it is soothing to be thrown off schedule and experience the unexpected! Who knows what may happen or who we may meet!?
In conclusion, live and let live and whatever happens will happen, so just learn from it, grow as a person and move on! Life is too short to miserably dwell on regrets and mistakes in the past.
