HUM TV or ARY? You Decide!!

Pakistani dramas across the board are being watched more and more by all age groups. Gone are the days when Star Plus with its larger than life soaps like Kyun Keh Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. The new era of dramas is all about Humsafar (a blockbuster hit on HUM TV last year) and Pyarey Afzal (a colossal success on ARY channel).

This year has been quite bumpy for HUM TV (a channel that is generally considered to be the benchmark for quality plays).

With soaps like Iztzraab, Mohabat Sub Ka Sitara, Rubaroo, Mein Deewani and Bunty I Love You. None of these dramas managed to make the sort of impact that is generally expected of HUM TV dramas. Bunty I Love, despite having all the ingredients to make an impactful soap, failed to cause the desired stir amongst viewers and audiences at large. With a A-List star cast and a commendable writer (Khalil ur Rahman) the store lacked the sort of luster it had originally anticipated.

Other soaps like Iztarrab, Muhabbat Sub Ka Sitara and Mein Dewaani were too focused on women being subjugated and “humiliated” on screen to create a pleasant and vibrant aura overall.

Surprisingly, ARY had quite an impactful year. With riveting performances and memorable storylines like Pyaray Afzal , Meri Beti and Shukk ARY was in the news for all the right reasons.

Ayesha Khan, Sajjal, Humza Abbas, Sana Javed and Izza Khan all graced the screen with their dynamic performances in the above mentioned plays and made their own respective mark. ARY proved its mettle in the realm of dramas with powerful stories and screenplays like Zara Aur Mehrunissa and Meray Apne.

The first half of 2014 had a clear winner, and HUM was obviously not it. However, the second half of last year proved to be quite a twist in terms of ratings and TPRs for both channels.

In the second half HUM aired soaps like Mausam, Aahista Aahista, Laa, Firaaq, Shanakht, Mohabbat Ab Nahi Hogi, Du Saal Ki Aurat and Mere Meherban among others. Even though dramas like Meray Meharbaan , Aahista Aahista and Shanakht began with a very strong viewership, somewhere along the line they lost their oomph and their audience as well. Du Saal Ki Aurat had a very dark and dreary undertone and failed to pick up in terms of rating and popularity.

Mohabaat Ab Nahi Hogi was filmed in Islamabad and its scenic location and “fresh” looking star cast definitely gave the soap and the channel a much needed boost to augment the ratings and viewership. HUM TV had a mixed year with a few dramas doing relatively well and other doing well below average, however, ARY seemed to have made a stronger impact even in the second half of 2014.

With dramas like Pyarey Afzal (as mentioned before) and Skiwaa, Koi Nahi Apna and Bhabi; ARY had more hits in its kitty as opposed to its competitor.

Koi Nahi Apna and Bhabi had an A-list star cast with the likes of Fahad Mustafa, Sarwat Gillani and Soha Ali Khan gracing the screen with their dynamic performances. Despite not making it huge in terms of popularity, these dramas fared much better than the content being aired on HUM TV.

Currently soaps like Digest Writer, Sadqay Tumharey , Aik Pal, Na Mehram and Tum Mera Hi Rahey are being aired. Even though these soaps are definitely making their mark and augmenting the ratings, it will be a matter of time before we can gauge the final verdict.

At the end of the day, it’s a matter of opinion and choice. If Pyara Afzal has made an impact on you then your choice is evident, however, if you want to wait out Sadqay Tumhare and see the final outcome before you make your decision, then hang on a while longer before you choose your favorite channel.
