Opener Ahmed Shehzad’s quickfire half-century and spinners’ collective performance were too much for Zimbabwe to handle, as Pakistan clinched a 25-run triumph – and early series lead – in Friday’s first Twenty20 International at the Harare Sports Club. Zimbabwe needed 162 to get in their 20 overs and got off to a wonderful start thanks to some brisk and aggressive batting by the opening pair of Sibanda and Masakadza. The duo put up 53 for the first wicket and were on course to overhaul this total. But once they fell, Pakistan really took control over the game with their spinners casting a web over the Zimbabwe batsmen. The asking rate eventually got out of hand as Pakistan eased towards the finishing line. Shehzad and Afridi were the star performers for Pakistan, the former with the bat and the latter with the ball.
Hafeez says he is happy to start with a win and is very pleased with the way the boys performed. It all started in West Indies with the team starting to find their feet and now it is just about building the momentum for the current as well as the future series. Says that 2nd T20 is on new day and under no circumstances are they taking Zimbabwe lightly for 2nd game. Adds that the strategy for 2nd T20 game is something they’ll discuss before the match itself.
