Just 214 runs was scored in the entire third day’s play for the loss of 7 wickets. Zimbabwe did well to reach to 327 and bettered it by ripping off the Pakistani top order. However, experience came in Zimbabwe’s way as Misbah and Younus registered a century stand and steadied the situation. Both helped Pakistan recover from a miserable start to their second innings to leave the Test match evenly poised. Elton Chigumbura had helped the home side extend their first innings lead to 78 in the morning in spite of Saeed Ajmal’s best efforts. Tinashe Panyangara and Tendai Chatara then reduced Pakistan to 23 for three in their second innings before Misbah and Younus came to the rescue.
The pair added 116 for the fourth-wicket prior to Misbah’s departure to Shingi Masakadza well into the final session. Zimbabwe’s bowlers were all disciplined and the rate of scoring never threatened to nudge three an over but it was nevertheless a crucial partnership. Zimbabwe late breakthrough pegged back Pakistan again and the lead is still under triple figures and a couple of early wickets on day 4 morning could really spice things up. Panyangara was exceptional for the hosts and it will need a team effort to dismantle Pakistan quickly. The visitors will know that another 120-130 runs will make it a tough chase for Zimbabwe. It will be interesting to see how this game goes on Day 4.
