West Indies, the champions of 2004 will play their first match on the same ground where they won the champions trophy. Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Ramnaresh Sarwan played that game almost nine years ago and are part of a side that can go all the way in this competition. West Indies were the World T20 champions recently but ODI’s is one part they haven’t been the best for quite some time. Darren Sammy did get WI to win the T20 but due to unimpressive peformance in ODI’s, West Indies appointed Dwayne Bravo to lead the team in the first big tournament. Some of the West Indies players are in good form as seen in the IPL which can be a big positive for the team but the shaky middle order is one of the concern for the team. Even the bowling looks strong on paper but as we have seen in first warm-up how badly Shane Watson hammered them.

Pakistan have been in the semi-finals three time but has never won the Champions Trophy. Under the leadership of Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan will be looking to win this time. They have a superb bowling attack with Junaid Khan and Wahab Roaz looking in excellent form in the warm-up games. Pakistan have dropped some key players like Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Gul (due to njury) but their bowling still has a lot of strength. Pakistan weakness lies in the inconsistent middle order because of which they have lost many crunch games. On paper, they appear a balanced unit with top guns like Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik, but both these experienced batsman have looked unsure in most of the matches. To stand a chance against a talented, varied, and deep West Indian side, Pakistan will be hoping that their middle order fires on what promises to be dry Oval wicket.
