India v Zimbabwe 2nd ODI Live Match – 26th July 2013

Zimbabwe will take on India in the second ODI of their five-match series at Harare on Friday. India lead 1-0 in the series after winning the first ODI rather comfortably against Zimbabwe on Wednesday. There was an almost-familiar century from Virat Kohli while debutant Ambati Rayadu scored an unbeaten half-century to join 10 other Indians reaching that landmark.
The visitors chased down a target of 229 win more than five overs to spare and with six wickets remaining. This was after Zimbabwe, put into bat by India, failed to capitalise on a good start and ended with only 66 runs in the last 11.2 overs. Sikandar Raza’s strong showing in the game for Zimbabwe – he scored a very matured innings of 82 – ensured that he will be a batsman the Indian bowlers will need to study a little more carefully going into the second ODI.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe will know this is a rather inexperienced Indian bowling line-up and will look to attack likes of Jaidev Unadkat and Shami Ahmed if they have to compete with the visitors. The good news for Zimbabwe from the first ODI is that they managed to eke out the in-form Indian openers rather cheaply with Shikhar Dhawan scoring only 17 and Rohit Sharma making 20. The bad news is that they are not the kind of players who will remain without runs and unless Kyle Jarvis can bowl a tad better than he did in the first ODI, things will continue to remain the same for Zimbabwe.
India is unlikely to change their winning side. The team may have a relatively young and inexperienced side, but it contains sufficient firepower and talent to make light work of the Zimbabwean attack. There’s a definite mismatch if you can rest MS Dhoni, Ravi Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and still win comfortably by six wickets.
It’s not all doom and gloom for Zimbabwe—there may well be a surprise in one of the five matches in this series. If they can put on a big score batting first, which they are capable of, the scoreboard pressure may lead to mistakes being made by India in the chase. Zimbabwe, too, are probably likely to keep the same side if all players are assessed as fit. This is their most settled batting side in a long time, and it is the core of the side who beat Bangladesh in that recent series.
