West Indies v Pakistan 5th ODI LIVE – 24th July 2013
The five-match One-Day International Series between West Indies and Pakistan reaches its conclusion on Wednesday. Pakistan will be looking to seal a series victory in the 5th ODI in St Lucia this week as they already hold a 2-1 lead going into this final match, while West Indies will be hoping to save some face with a series-levelling victory. The series so far has been marked by some woeful batting from both teams but it is the tourists who hold the edge. Pakistan won the 1st ODI by 126 runs before the West Indies levelled things up with a 37-run victory in the second match. The two teams played out a tie in the third one-dayer but Pakistan took an unassailable 2-1 lead with a six-wicket success at the Beausejour Cricket Ground at Gros Islet in St Lucia at the weekend.
It was quite a confession that Chris Gayle isn’t keen on the pace of Mohammad Irfan that the Caribbean side chose to drop him down the order for the last match. You would feel that even though he is out of form, Kieron Pollard would be better suited to that role. Pollard returning could be the only change for the West Indies here. The tourists have managed to keep Gayle quiet for now, but it takes one thunderous effort from the former captain to seal a result and Final ODI may be just that. Darren Sammy and Samuels perform periodically but the West Indies need someone like Saeed Ajmal and Hafeez for the middle overs to make an impression.
Pakistan go into this match off the back of a very good run chase in the last game, controlled by their captain Misbah-ul-Haq who is continuing his good form. The Pakistan spin trio of Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal are restricting sides and Mohammad Irfan is a top order destroyer at the minute. Pakistan look a much better side with Afridi in it as he gives depth to bowl disciplines.
Although this isn’t technically a series decider in its truest form, the series is still on the line here which should make for a very competitive match. Everything we’ve seen so far in the series suggests Pakistan will win here and but for a very wayward final over in the third ODI, the series would be over by now. It isn’t fully over yet but Pakistan can wrap the series up in style with another win here.
